Spiritual Warfare Teaching Series: Obedience & Authority – Part 2
Teaching Series: Born into Battle – Equipping the Saints for Spiritual Warfare By: Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Opening Scripture
“The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, and He delights in his way.” – Psalm 37:23 (NKJV)
Introduction
I once met a believer who had walked in great authority early in their ministry — prayers were effective, discernment was sharp, and breakthroughs came quickly. But over time, small compromises crept in: skipping prayer, ignoring the Spirit’s checks, and relying on past victories instead of fresh obedience. The authority they once carried began to fade. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I explain that authority is not a one-time gift you receive and keep regardless of your walk; it is sustained through ongoing submission to God’s order.
Guarding Against Counterfeits
The enemy loves to offer shortcuts to influence — charisma without character, gifting without submission. Acts 19:13–16 shows the danger: the sons of Sceva tried to use Jesus’ name without relationship or obedience, and the result was disaster. True authority flows from intimacy with God, not from formulas or borrowed phrases.
A soldier who stops taking orders is already off mission. Proverbs 9:9 says, “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser.” Staying teachable means inviting correction, seeking counsel, and letting the Word challenge you daily. Pride is a silent authority-killer; humility keeps you in position.
Authority is reinforced by consistency — obeying God in public and in private, in small matters and in large ones. Luke 16:10 reminds us, “He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much.” When obedience becomes your reflex, authority becomes your atmosphere.
Recognizing the Signs of Drift
In the book, I outline warning signs that your authority may be weakening:
- Prayer life becoming irregular
- Delayed obedience becoming normal
- Sensitivity to the Spirit’s conviction dulling
- Relying on past testimonies instead of fresh encounters.
When you notice these, repent quickly, realign, and re-engage with God’s orders.
Practical Exercise for the Week
- Ask the Holy Spirit to highlight one area where your obedience has slipped.
- Write down the specific step you will take to realign.
- Share it with a trusted prayer partner for accountability and check in at the end of the week.
Reflection Question
- What daily habit or hidden compromise could be eroding my authority, and what will I do this week to address it?
Be Encouraged
Authority is not maintained by force of will but by faithfulness of walk. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I share practical safeguards, accountability rhythms, and spiritual disciplines to keep your authority sharp. If you don’t yet have your copy, I encourage you to get it and use it as your guide. The more you guard your obedience, the more your authority will remain unshakable in every battle.
