Sunday Sermon: Standing Firm Against Compromise
by Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Brothers and sisters, I’ve come to a sobering realization—we are failing God in the simple, everyday things. Every day, I witness how we, as Christians, are compromising our beliefs. It’s become such a common practice that if you dare speak against it, you’re made to feel as if you’re in the wrong. This is a season where many Christians are at risk of falling away, and it’s through subtle, intelligent tricks like these that the devil seeks to cause us to ‘almost make it’ to the Kingdom.
Recognizing the Compromises
Let me explain what I mean:
- You’re a Christian, yet you don’t find anything wrong with people overly indulging in alcohol, even when it seems like they just have a few drinks a day.
- You’re a Christian, but you’re addicted to watching shows like Game of Thrones, True Blood, 50 Shades of Grey, Scandal, Real Housewives—and you’re missing Bible study, youth fellowship, and prayer service.
- You’re a Christian, but you see nothing wrong with disciplining your child to the point of bruising or cutting them – or causing more serious injury and death.
- You’re a Christian, and your family or relatives have no food to eat, but you don’t reach out to feed them.
- You’re a Christian, married, but you don’t see anything wrong with holding grudges against your spouse when you have a disagreement. In fact, you justify it.
- You’re a Christian, but you don’t see anything wrong with taking office supplies—pens, paper, and other items—from your workplace.
- You’re a Christian, but you condone bad behavior from your friends and excuse it by saying, “Ah man, that’s just how they are.”
The blood of Jesus is against all of that. These are lies and prominent deceits from the enemy.
The Enemy’s Deception
The devil is a liar, a deceiver, a murderer, a covetous rebel who wants to take us into eternity with him when he’s cast down into the pit of hell. We need to wake up, rise up, and seek forgiveness for our deeds.
Every day we compromise our Christianity in some way, and this must not continue. I say “we” because I’m included in this struggle. I’m working towards heaven like a fat kid running after an ice cream truck to get a chocolate-dipped cone on a Sunday evening!
A Call to Authentic Christian Living
We need to wake up and stop compromising our faith. With so much turmoil in the world, we need to strive towards progress, if not perfection, in Christ. We need to be true examples, not fakes.
Scriptural Guidance:
The Bible speaks clearly about these issues:
- Luke 10:27 (KJV):
“And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neighbor as thyself.” - Romans 12:1-2 (KJV):
“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” - Colossians 3:5 (KJV):
“Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” - 2 John 1:7-8 (KJV):
“For many deceivers are entered into the world… Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward.” - Matthew 6:33 (KJV):
“But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.” - James 4:17 (KJV):
“Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.”
Conclusion
Consider carefully, we cannot afford to be complacent. The times are urgent, and the enemy is cunning. Let us examine our lives, repent where we’ve fallen short, and commit ourselves wholly to God. Let’s stop making excuses for ourselves and others. Instead, let us strive to live lives that are holy and pleasing to the Lord.
I urge you today to take a stand. Recommit yourself to living authentically for Christ, without compromise. Support one another in this journey, holding each other accountable in love. If you’ve recognized areas in your life where you’ve compromised, bring them before the Lord. His grace is sufficient, and His mercy endures forever.
Closing Prayer:
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, acknowledging where we’ve compromised our faith. Forgive us, Lord, for the times we’ve fallen short. Strengthen us through Your Holy Spirit to stand firm against the schemes of the enemy. Help us to love You with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. We seek first Your kingdom and righteousness. Guide us to be true examples of Your love and holiness. In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.
Blessing:
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He make His face shine upon you and be gracious unto you. May He lift up His countenance upon you and give you peace. Go forth, uncompromised and steadfast in your faith. Amen.
