Giants of the Faith: John G. Lake, The Apostle to Africa
by Minister Denise N. Fyffe
John Graham Lake, widely known as John G. Lake, was a remarkable evangelist, missionary, and healing minister whose life exemplified radical faith and a deep commitment to God’s work. His ministry, which spanned continents, was marked by miraculous healings, profound spiritual insights, and a passion for the gospel. Dubbed the “Apostle to Africa,” Lake’s influence continues to resonate within Pentecostal and charismatic movements. This article explores his life, ministry, and enduring legacy.
Early Life and Spiritual Awakening
John G. Lake was born on March 18, 1870, in St. Marys, Ontario, Canada, and later moved with his family to the United States. Lake’s early life was fraught with hardship, including the deaths of several family members due to illness. These personal tragedies fueled his desire to understand divine healing and deepened his dependence on God.
Lake was converted at the age of 16 and later entered ministry after a successful career in business. He married Jennie Stevens, whose miraculous healing from a terminal illness played a pivotal role in solidifying his faith in God’s power to heal. This experience shaped his theology and his calling to a healing ministry, rooted in Scriptures like James 5:15: “And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up.”
Ministry in South Africa
The Call to Africa
In 1908, Lake and his family moved to South Africa, answering God’s call to bring the gospel to the continent. During his five years there, Lake established over 500 churches and trained hundreds of local leaders to continue the work of evangelism and healing. His ministry was characterized by extraordinary faith, as Lake often relied solely on prayer and God’s provision to sustain the mission.
Healing and Miracles
Lake’s ministry in South Africa was marked by numerous accounts of miraculous healings, deliverances, and conversions. His belief in the power of the Holy Spirit to work through believers inspired countless people to pursue a deeper relationship with God (Mark 16:17-18: “And these signs will accompany those who believe…they will place their hands on sick people, and they will get well”).
Legacy in South Africa
Lake’s work laid the foundation for a thriving Pentecostal movement in South Africa. The churches he established continued to grow, spreading the message of salvation, healing, and Spirit-filled living across the region.
The Healing Rooms
Upon returning to the United States, Lake founded the Spokane Healing Rooms in Washington in 1915. These centers became hubs for prayer, teaching, and miraculous healings, with reports of thousands of people being healed through prayer. Lake’s approach emphasized faith, the authority of Scripture, and the believer’s access to the power of the Holy Spirit (Luke 9:1-2: “When Jesus had called the Twelve together, he gave them power and authority to drive out all demons and to cure diseases, and he sent them out to proclaim the kingdom of God and to heal the sick”).
The Healing Rooms became a model for similar ministries worldwide, inspiring believers to trust in God’s ability to heal and restore.
Challenges and Perseverance
Lake’s ministry was not without challenges. He faced financial struggles, the death of his wife, Jennie, and opposition from religious and secular authorities. Despite these hardships, Lake remained steadfast in his faith, often quoting Philippians 4:13: “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.” His perseverance in the face of adversity serves as a testament to his reliance on God’s grace and power.
Legacy and Impact
John G. Lake’s influence extends far beyond his lifetime. His teachings on divine healing and the believer’s authority in Christ have shaped Pentecostal and charismatic theology. The Healing Rooms he established continue to inspire similar ministries worldwide, equipping believers to step into their God-given authority to heal and deliver.
Lake’s unwavering faith and dedication to God’s work serve as a powerful example for Christians today. His life exemplifies the words of Matthew 10:8: “Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give.”
Conclusion
John G. Lake’s life and ministry were a remarkable demonstration of what God can accomplish through a surrendered heart and radical faith. His passion for the gospel, commitment to healing, and love for the people he served continue to inspire believers to live Spirit-empowered lives.
As we reflect on Lake’s legacy, may we be encouraged to pursue God’s purposes with the same fervor, trusting Him to work through us to bring healing, hope, and salvation to the world.
