Sunday Sermon: Stay Vigilant in the Quiet Moments
by Minister Denise N. Fyffe
There are days in the Christian walk when everything seems still—too still. The spiritual warfare we’ve become accustomed to is suddenly silent, and it feels as though the enemy has retreated. These are the moments when you can almost hear the crickets chirping in the spiritual realm. But for those of us who have been in this spiritual warfare long enough, we know better. Stillness doesn’t always mean peace. It often means that the enemy is planning his next attack.
The truth is, the enemy is always devising strategies to take us down, even in these quiet times. One of his most successful tactics is making us feel at ease, encouraging us to let down our guard. This tactic is dangerous because when we feel secure, we tend to relax our vigilance, allowing him to scale the battlements of our spiritual defenses. The enemy is cunning and will even disguise himself as a fellow soldier—a friend, a coworker, or even a family member—making his attack all the more devastating.
The Deceptive Silence of Spiritual Life
In the quiet moments of your Christian life, it’s easy to let your guard down. You might think that the battle is over, that the attacks have ceased, and that you can finally take a breather. But this is when the enemy strikes the hardest. 1 Peter 5:8 (KJV) warns us, “Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour.” The enemy doesn’t stop, even when we do.
There is another side to this silence, however. God allows moments of quietness to give us time to regenerate, to recover, and to regain our strength. But what do many of us do instead? We lose our focus. We stop reading our Bibles, stop praying, stop attending church, and stop fasting. We let down our spiritual guard, and that’s when the enemy strikes.
Ephesians 6:11 (KJV) reminds us, “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.” But in these quiet moments, we often take off the armor, thinking that the battle is over. This is the enemy’s plan all along—to lull us into a false sense of security, knowing that if we drop our guard, he can get closer, undetected.
Recognizing the Enemy’s Tactics
How do I know this? Because I’ve been there. I’ve been caught in this situation on many occasions. The enemy has a way of setting traps, even in the quiet moments, and watching from afar as we slowly walk into them. He puts distractions in our path—whether it’s busyness, complacency, or even leisure—that causes us to drift away from our spiritual disciplines.
But the key is to recognize the mistake and correct it quickly. As soon as you realize you’ve let your guard down, put on the whole armor of God again and man your spiritual edges. The Christian life isn’t one of comfort and ease; it’s one of constant vigilance and warfare. Ephesians 6:13 (KJV) tells us, “Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.”
We must always be ready, always be on guard, because the enemy never truly rests.
Engaging in the Christian Life
The Christian life is engaging if you’re doing it right. If you are walking with God, you will find yourself in constant spiritual warfare, because the enemy is fighting for your soul. If you’re not engaged, if your Christian walk is smooth sailing with no challenges or difficulties, then it’s likely that you’re not truly engaged in the war for your soul.
Jesus Himself didn’t have a smooth time of it, and neither will we. John 16:33 (KJV) says, “In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.” This means that tribulations and battles are a part of our journey, but we are not alone. God is with us, and He has already won the ultimate victory.
In these quiet moments, don’t be lulled into a false sense of security. Instead, strengthen yourself in the Lord, put on your spiritual armor, and stand firm, knowing that the battle is always raging, even when you can’t see it.
Conclusion
The Christian life is not a life of ease or comfort. It’s a life of spiritual warfare, and we must always be ready for battle. When things are quiet, don’t let down your guard. Stay vigilant, stay armored, and stay close to God. James 4:7 (KJV) tells us, “Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” This is our call—to submit to God, to resist the enemy, and to stay engaged in the fight for our souls.
If you’ve been experiencing a time of silence or peace, I encourage you today—don’t let down your guard. Use this time to draw closer to God, to strengthen yourself in His Word, and to prepare for whatever may come next. The enemy is always scheming, but God has given us everything we need to stand firm. Put on your armor and be ready for the battle ahead.
Closing Prayer
Let us pray.
Heavenly Father, we thank You for being our strength and our shield in every season of life. Lord, in the quiet moments, help us not to let down our guard but to stay vigilant and armored in Your Word. We ask for Your protection and guidance as we navigate the spiritual battles that lie ahead. Strengthen us, Lord, and help us to trust in You at all times, knowing that You have already won the victory. In Jesus’ name, we pray. Amen.
Blessing
May the Lord bless you and keep you. May He give you the strength to stand firm in the quiet moments and may His peace guard your heart and mind as you remain vigilant in the spiritual battle. Trust in His protection and know that He is always with you. Amen
Shalom.
