Spiritual Warfare Teaching Series: Training & Discipleship – Part 2
Teaching Series: Born into Battle – Equipping the Saints for Spiritual Warfare By: Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Opening Scripture
“Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, ‘If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.’” – John 8:31–32 (NKJV)
Introduction
I often picture the moment when Jesus called His first disciples by the Sea of Galilee. He didn’t hand them a manual or give them a lecture; He simply said, “Follow Me” (Matthew 4:19, NKJV). That invitation was the beginning of a journey that would transform fishermen into apostles, ordinary men into world-changers. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I explain that discipleship is not just about learning information — it’s about transformation through relationship, obedience, and practice.
The Cost of Discipleship
Jesus was clear that following Him would cost something. Luke 9:23 (NKJV) records His words: “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me.” Discipleship requires surrender — of our comfort, our preferences, and sometimes our plans. In warfare terms, it’s the willingness to leave civilian life behind and commit fully to the mission. Without this commitment, training will always feel optional, and growth will be inconsistent.
Multiplication Through Discipleship
One of the most powerful aspects of discipleship is multiplication. Paul told Timothy to pass on what he had learned to “faithful men who will be able to teach others also” (2 Timothy 2:2, NKJV). This is how the Kingdom advances — not just through large gatherings, but through one life pouring into another, who then pours into another. In the book, I share that true discipleship always has an outward focus; it equips you to equip others.
Discipleship as a Safeguard in Warfare
A well-trained disciple is harder for the enemy to deceive or derail. They know how to handle the Word, discern truth from error, and stand firm under pressure. Discipleship builds spiritual reflexes so that when the enemy attacks, the believer’s first response is rooted in Scripture and guided by the Spirit. This is why isolation is dangerous — without the accountability and sharpening of others, even strong believers can drift.
Practical Exercise for the Week
If you are not currently being discipled, pray and ask God to connect you with a mature believer who can walk with you in this season. If you are already in a discipleship relationship, identify one person you can begin to intentionally encourage and invest in over the next month.
Reflection Question
- Am I both receiving discipleship and giving it to others, or am I only on one side of the process?
Be Encouraged
Discipleship is the training ground where soldiers of Christ are forged. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I outline practical models for discipleship, questions to ask a mentor, and ways to multiply your impact. If you don’t yet have your copy, I encourage you to get it and use it as your guide. The more you commit to both learning and teaching, the stronger the Body becomes — and the more ground we take back from the enemy.

The Invitation
I invite you today to take a deep look at yourself and reflect on your life. Are you searching for something more? Are you satisfied with how things are today? Is God calling you to confess your sins, be baptized and accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior? Have you been ignoring him? What can you do to take the first step?
Trust God to help you with that first step.
