Dreams and Visions: 6 Guidance Dreams in the Bible

Welcome Dreamer, these biblical dreams show several occasions when God used dreams to provide guidance, warning, or direction in critical moments across both the Old and New Testaments. Here are six dreams in Scripture that provide guidance, warning, or direction about what to do, where to go, or how to respond in important moments:

1. Jacob’s Call to Go Home (Genesis 31:10–13) In Genesis 31:10–13 Jacob recounts a dream in which the Angel of God identifies Himself as the God of Bethel and tells Jacob to arise and leave the land. This aligns with the Lord’s direct command in Genesis 31:3 that Jacob return to the land of his fathers and family.
2. Solomon’s Wisdom Request (1 Kings 3:5–15) At Gibeon God appears to Solomon in a dream and invites him to ask for anything. Solomon chooses discernment, and God grants him unparalleled wisdom—shaping his reign.
3. Joseph Takes Mary as His Wife (Matthew 1:20–21) An angel appears to Joseph in a dream, telling him not to fear marrying Mary. This direction affirms Jesus’ divine conception and safeguards God’s redemptive plan.
4. Joseph Flees to Egypt (Matthew 2:13) Warned in a dream that Herod seeks the child’s life, Joseph immediately takes Mary and baby Jesus to Egypt—preserving the Messiah’s safety.
5. Joseph’s Return to Israel (Matthew 2:19–21) After Herod’s death, an angel of the Lord appears to Joseph in a dream and directs him back to the land of Israel (Matthew 2:19–21). After learning that Archelaus reigns in Judea, Joseph is warned by God in another dream and turns aside into Galilee, where the family settles in Nazareth (Matthew 2:22–23).
6. Pilate’s Wife’s Warning Dream (Matthew 27:19) While Pilate is sitting on the judgment seat, his wife sends word telling him to have nothing to do with “that just Man,” because she had suffered many things that day in a dream because of Him. The verse does not state that the dream occurred at midnight.
