Spiritual Warfare Teaching Series: Training & Discipleship – Part 1
Teaching Series: Born into Battle – Equipping the Saints for Spiritual Warfare By: Minister Denise N. Fyffe
Opening Scripture
“And the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also.” – 2 Timothy 2:2 (NKJV)
Introduction
I once watched a young believer step into ministry with incredible zeal, only to burn out within months. It wasn’t a lack of passion — it was a lack of preparation. Passion can ignite the fire, but training keeps it burning. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I share that discipleship is not an optional extra for the Christian life; it is the process by which soldiers are trained, equipped, and made ready for the realities of battle. Without it, we risk sending people into the fight without the skills or stamina to endure.
Why Training Matters in Warfare
Paul often used the imagery of athletes and soldiers to describe the Christian life. In 1 Corinthians 9:25–27, he spoke of discipline, focus, and self-control. Training in the Kingdom is not about earning salvation — that’s already secured in Christ — but about developing the maturity, resilience, and discernment to stand firm when the pressure comes. Discipleship shapes character deepens understanding of God’s Word and builds spiritual reflexes so that obedience becomes second nature.
The Role of a Discipler
In the book (p. 126), I explain that a discipler is more than a teacher; they are a mentor, example, and guide. Jesus didn’t just lecture His disciples — He walked with them, corrected them, and sent them out to practice what they had learned. In warfare, a discipler helps a believer identify their strengths, address their weaknesses, and learn how to apply biblical truth in real-life situations.
The Role of the Disciple
Discipleship is a two-way commitment. The disciple must be teachable, faithful, and willing to be stretched. Proverbs 9:9 (NKJV) says, “Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser.” Growth happens when we receive correction without offense, apply what we’ve learned, and remain consistent even when it’s uncomfortable.
Training for Endurance
In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle (p. 127), I highlight that endurance is built through consistent practice, not occasional bursts of effort. Just as a soldier drills daily to be ready for sudden conflict, believers must engage regularly in prayer, Scripture study, fellowship, and service. These disciplines are not chores; they are the training ground where strength is forged.
Practical Exercise for the Week
Identify one mature believer you respect and ask them to recommend a spiritual discipline you can focus on for the next 30 days. Commit to practicing it daily, and keep a brief journal of what you learn and how it impacts your walk with God.
Reflection Question
- Am I positioning myself to be trained and discipled, or am I trying to fight battles without preparation?
Be Encouraged
Training and discipleship are the difference between a believer who survives the battle and one who thrives in it. In Spiritual Warfare: Born into Battle, I provide practical steps, biblical models, and personal insights for building a lifestyle of consistent growth. If you don’t yet have your copy, I encourage you to get it and use it as your guide. The more you invest in training now, the stronger and steadier you’ll be when the fight comes.
