Be Encouraged: How to Pray for Peace During War
By: Minister Denise N. Fyffe
In times of war and conflict, peace can feel like a distant dream. For Christians living in war-torn regions or watching from afar with heavy hearts, the instinct is to pray — but sometimes we don’t know where to start. What words can capture the anguish, fear, loss, and hope? What kind of prayer moves heaven when the earth is trembling beneath our feet?
The Bible assures us that prayer is powerful, and that God hears the cries of His people. Let this be your reminder: now more than ever, it is time to pray bold, faithful, Spirit-led prayers for peace, healing, protection, and God’s glory to be revealed in the darkest places.
1. Start with God’s Character
Before we ask, we remember who God is.
He is the Prince of Peace (Isaiah 9:6), the Lord of Hosts (Psalm 46:7), our Refuge and Strength (Psalm 46:1), and the One who rules over all nations (Psalm 22:28). War does not surprise Him. He is still sovereign, still mighty, and still compassionate.
Psalm 46:10 (NKJV)
“Be still and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!”
Let your prayer begin in worship, not fear. Acknowledge His greatness. Thank Him for His power and mercy. Then cry out to Him from a place of faith.
2. Pray for God’s Peace to Reign
Jesus said in John 14:27:
“Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you; not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.”
Pray that this supernatural peace will flood the hearts of those living in fear and chaos. Ask God to:
-
Calm anxious minds.
-
Bring stillness to neighborhoods under attack.
-
Guard the hearts of families separated or displaced.
-
Surround every believer with peace that surpasses understanding (Philippians 4:6-7).
3. Pray for Protection and Deliverance
Call on God as a Defender and Shield. He is the One who rescues from the snare of the enemy and covers His people in times of danger.
Psalm 91:4 (NKJV)
“He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge; His truth shall be your shield and buckler.”
-
Pray for the safety of innocent civilians.
-
Ask for divine intervention over children, the elderly, and the vulnerable.
-
Plead for God to confuse the plans of the enemy and stop bloodshed.
-
Ask for spiritual protection over churches, missionaries, and believers in the conflict zone.
4. Pray for Wisdom for Leaders and Peace Negotiators
Scripture calls us to pray for kings and all those in authority (1 Timothy 2:1–2), especially during times of war. Ask God to raise up:
-
Leaders who value life and justice.
-
Mediators who carry wisdom, discernment, and integrity.
-
Voices of peace even in enemy camps.
Proverbs 21:1 (NKJV)
“The king’s heart is in the hand of the Lord, like the rivers of water; He turns it wherever He wishes.”
5. Pray for Revival in the Midst of War
During pain and destruction, many people are turning their eyes toward God. The battlefield becomes fertile ground for the Gospel when hearts are desperate for hope.
-
Pray for boldness among pastors and Christian leaders.
-
Pray for supernatural encounters—dreams, visions, miracles—that point to Jesus.
-
Pray that war would not just end, but that God would use it to awaken nations to His love and truth.
Romans 8:28 (NKJV)
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.”
6. A Sample Prayer for Peace During War
Heavenly Father,
You are the God of all peace, the One who calms storms and heals broken lands.
In this time of war, we cry out to You.
We ask You to protect the innocent, to end the violence, to silence the weapons of destruction.
Let the bloodshed cease, and let mercy flow.
Comfort those who mourn. Bring healing to the wounded, and hope to the hopeless.
Cover families, soldiers, children, and leaders with your grace.
May Your peace prevail where human strength has failed.
And in all of this, may Your name be lifted high.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
Be Encouraged
If you’re feeling helpless in the face of global violence, know this: your prayers matter. Heaven listens. Angels respond. God is near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18), and He honors the intercession of His children.
Now is the time to stand in the gap. To pray. To weep. To believe. And to hope. Because even in war, God is still moving.
