Stages of the Dreamer

“When there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, reveal myself to them in visions, I speak to them in dreams…” — Numbers 12:6

God is always talking—or do I say communicating. He is the Creator of all things, the Supreme Being. As such, the magnitude or multitude of ways that He can communicate with us is limitless. Dreams and visions are just another way in which He does so.

God Communicates Through Dreams

The concept of God communicating through dreams and visions is deeply rooted in the Christian faith, as evidenced by numerous passages in the Bible. For instance, Acts 2:17 reveals, “In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.”

This passage suggests that dreams and visions are among the ways God imparts His wisdom and guidance to humanity. Similarly, Numbers 12:6 states, “When there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, reveal myself to them in visions, I speak to them in dreams,” further affirming that such experiences are significant modes of divine communication.

Dreamers’ Levels of Proficiency

Some dreamers are more proficient in receiving and heeding, even in translating whatever comes through. For others, they are on the march through the various stages of developing their proficiency, whether that is as:

The process of spiritual growth and the development of the ability to understand and interpret divine messages can indeed be likened to learning a new language, where one progresses from basic understanding to fluency.

In the context of spiritual communication, 1 Corinthians 14:1 encourages believers to “Follow the way of love and eagerly desire gifts of the Spirit, especially prophecy.” This pursuit of spiritual gifts, including the interpretation of dreams and visions, is akin to advancing through levels of proficiency in language learning.

Achieving mastery is more probable if we complete several key steps, including paying attention to your dreams, acknowledging the source—God—and documenting the messages received in a dream or vision.

God Is the Source

Moreover, the Bible emphasizes the importance of acknowledging God as the source of these revelations. In Daniel 2:28, Daniel declares, “There is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries,” recognizing that the ability to interpret dreams comes from God. This acknowledgment is crucial for those who seek to understand and translate divine communications.

Write the Dreams Down

Documenting these messages can be seen as parallel to the biblical practice of recording visions and prophecies. Habakkuk 2:2 advises, “Write down the revelation and make it plain on tablets so that a herald may run with it.” This act of writing down what God communicates ensures that the message can be preserved and shared with others, furthering the spread of God’s word.

The Bible provides ample evidence that God communicates with His people through dreams and visions, and that developing the ability to receive and understand these messages is a journey of spiritual growth.

By paying attention to dreams, acknowledging God as the source, and documenting the messages received, believers can progress through stages of spiritual proficiency, much like learning a new language, ultimately achieving mastery in understanding God’s will.
