Stages of the Dreamer

“Hear now My words: If there is a prophet among you, I, the LORD, make Myself known to him in a vision…” — Numbers 12:6 (NKJV)
God is always talking—or do I say communicating. He is the Creator of all things, the Supreme Being. As such, the magnitude or multitude of ways that He can communicate with us is limitless. Dreams and visions are just another way in which He does so.
God Communicates Through Dreams
The concept of God communicating through dreams and visions is deeply rooted in the Christian faith, as evidenced by numerous passages in the Bible. For instance, Acts 2:17 teaches that in the last days God would pour out His Spirit, with sons and daughters prophesying, young men seeing visions, and old men dreaming dreams. The passage establishes dreams and visions within the biblical record without making every dream a divine message.
This passage suggests that dreams and visions are among the ways God imparts His wisdom and guidance to humanity. Similarly, Numbers 12:6 says that God may make Himself known to a prophet in a vision and speak in a dream. This affirms dreams and visions as biblical modes of divine communication while leaving room for discernment concerning any modern experience.
Dreamers’ Levels of Proficiency
Some dreamers are more proficient in receiving and heeding, even in translating whatever comes through. For others, they are on the march through the various stages of developing their proficiency, whether that is as:
The process of spiritual growth and the development of the ability to understand and interpret divine messages can indeed be likened to learning a new language, where one progresses from basic understanding to fluency.
In the context of spiritual growth, 1 Corinthians 14:1 (NKJV) tells believers to “Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.” The verse does not identify dream interpretation as a specific spiritual gift, so growth in interpreting dreams should be described as developing discernment, biblical understanding and faithful stewardship rather than as a gift explicitly named in this passage.
Growth in discernment is strengthened by paying attention to dreams, recording them carefully, testing their source rather than assuming every dream comes from God, and documenting what was actually received before interpretation is added.
God Is the Source of Genuine Revelation
When Scripture presents revelation from God, it also emphasizes that understanding belongs to Him. In Daniel 2:28, Daniel says that there is a God in heaven who reveals secrets. This supports dependence on God for genuine revelation and interpretation, but it should not be used to assume that every dream originates with God.
Write the Dreams Down
Documenting dreams can be compared cautiously with the biblical practice of recording revelation. Habakkuk 2:2 (NKJV) says, “Write the vision And make it plain on tablets.” In context, this command concerns the specific vision given to Habakkuk; it is a useful stewardship principle, not a universal command that every dream is divine revelation.
Scripture provides ample evidence that God sometimes communicates through dreams and visions. Christian growth therefore calls for discernment: believers should test experiences carefully, grow in biblical understanding, and avoid assuming that every dream is a message from God.
By recording dreams accurately, testing possible sources and interpretations, and depending on God for wisdom when genuine revelation is involved, believers can mature in discernment and responsible stewardship. The goal is not mastery over divine communication, but humility, biblical faithfulness, and obedience to what can be responsibly established.
